Motor Carrier Identity Theft On The Rise

July 30, 2025

Maine Motor Transport Association has received several calls in the last few months from small motor carriers whose USDOT information has been altered online by someone not associated with their company, changing the contact email, phone number, and other information on their MCS-150 form from the company contact to a phone number and email that goes to the person stealing the carrier identity.

MMTA members reported learning about this when they began getting calls from Insurance companies or Brokers asking about loads that they did not transport. One member also reported getting email notices from FMCSA that their company information was being accessed online by a new browser. This email is generated from FMCSA when your portal account is accessed and also reports where the browser is located that is accessing the account. If you are not in your account or have not granted access…you should immediately check your information online or in your portal and take steps to protect your information.

Motor Carriers are encouraged to review the information in their FMCSA PORTAL: https://portal.fmcsa.dot.gov/login regularly to ensure that the information showing is accurate. You can also review the FMCSA SAFER SYSTEM: https://safer.fmcsa.dot.gov/ in the Company Snapshot and Licensing and Insurance to review what information is publicly available regarding your USDOT information. Another recommendation is to ensure that an email address and cell phone number is included on your MCS-150, so as not to leave a blank for would be hacker’s to add their information.

Remember that you should NEVER give out your USDOT PORTAL PIN #. If you are concerned that your PORTAL PIN has been compromised, you can request a USDOT PIN RESET at this link: https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/registration/request-pin-number An additional step you can take is to change your Login.Gov password if you are concerned that you’ve been hacked.

As always, feel free to contact the MMTA Staff if you have questions regarding your compliance or if you need assistance with the FMCSA PORTAL.
