MMTA seeks member support to save Sappi’s Somerset Mill

Due to the inability of endangered Atlantic salmon and other sea-run fish to pass through Brookfield Renewable’s Shawmut Dam in Fairfield, the state DEP plans to deny certification as part of the dam relicensing effort. Removing the Shawmut Dam would likely result in the closure of nearby Sappi’s Somerset Mill.

Today, MMTA sent a letter to Governor Mills asking her to intervene given the significance of the economic impact this dam removal would have. We are asking everyone to contact the Governor, Maine DEP and even your local legislators to let them know this is an issue that is important to your company and to the Maine economy.
