The trucking industry is essential to Maine’s economy—and the next generation of professionals needs to hear your story. MMTA is looking for member companies willing to volunteer a team member to join the Career Exploration Unit at upcoming events depending upon the audience/event.
Volunteers may be asked to:
- Give a short presentation sharing their personal experience in trucking;
- Attend job fairs or career events to answer student/participant questions and provide perspective;
- Highlight lessons learned, safety practices, and why a career in trucking is important;
- Emphasize the industry as a whole, not any company specifically.
Who can participate:
Any position within your company is welcome! Drivers, technicians, freight handlers, management, safety, or office staff can all provide valuable insight. However, picking the right person is important for our workforce development efforts to be successful. Optimal qualities for volunteers include having an outgoing personality, a strong commitment to safety and a willingness to engage a variety of people, in a wide variety of age groups, in a variety of settings throughout Maine. MMTA is relying on our members to identify the right people for this important task benefiting our entire industry.
Why this matters:
- Students often don’t know about the variety of careers in trucking;
- Hearing from real professionals inspires confidence and interest;
- You help fill the workforce pipeline by showing students the opportunities, skills, and purpose behind every role in the industry;
- Trucking is everywhere. When they hear from people in their own community, we show real potential for a rewarding career.
The Career Exploration Unit is designed to be fun, educational, exciting, and spark curiosity in various trucking careers. Volunteers are asked to speak about the industry as a whole and not seek to promote any specific company. This is meant to be a team effort where a rising tide lifts all boats and we have designed it to be impartial when it comes to the different jobs, where candidates can get training, and focusing on any specific members.
Interested? To volunteer, or offer someone on your staff to volunteer, please provide:
- Company name;
- Town/County (we are prioritizing companies local to the events we schedule);
- Contact email; and
- A brief description of the qualities you (or your staff member) possess that makes you/them a good candidate for our workforce development efforts.
You will be added to a contact list for upcoming events.
