It has come to the attention of MMTA that many electronic Heavy Vehicle Use Tax filers have recently been receiving IRS notices through the mail stating their tax was not paid and are also adding “Failure to File” penalties. We are finding that, in most cases, these letters are inaccurate.
At this time, we are not sure what is causing the influx of such letters but are advising our members to first check your bank statement and/or card statement to be sure the IRS did, in fact, receive the tax payment. If you find they did, we recommend you send a copy of proof of payment to the IRS along with the letter you received. This should take care of the discrepancy.
We were going to provide the IRS Truck Tax Center hotline number for further information but we call that number and found that the IRS is not offering live assistance at this time.
