The U.S. Department of Transportation has launched the Freedom Haulers initiative, a new effort designed to connect military veterans with rewarding careers in the trucking industry while helping address the nation’s ongoing need for qualified professional drivers. The initiative brings together resources from the U.S. Department of Transportation, Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Labor, and other partners to make it easier for veterans to transition from military service to trucking careers.
Freedom Haulers highlights the many advantages veterans already bring to the profession, including experience operating heavy vehicles, a strong commitment to safety, discipline, and mission-focused leadership. The initiative also promotes existing federal programs that can significantly reduce the time and cost required to earn a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), including GI Bill funding for approved training programs, military waivers for knowledge and skills testing, and apprenticeship opportunities.
One important feature of the initiative is the Even Exchange Program, which allows qualified veterans with approved military driving credentials to exchange their military license for a civilian CDL without having to complete the traditional skills or knowledge testing requirements in participating states. Maine is one of the states that participates in the Even Exchange Program, providing eligible service members with one of the most direct pathways into the trucking profession.
For Maine’s trucking industry, Freedom Haulers represents another opportunity to recruit highly trained, safety-conscious professionals into an industry that keeps our economy moving. Veterans have long demonstrated the professionalism, responsibility, and dedication that trucking employers value, making them an excellent fit for careers behind the wheel.
