Despite heavy opposition from the Motor Transport Association of Connecticut, the State of Connecticut has passed an onerous weight distance tax to be implemented on January 1, 2023.

While the process of remitting the tax has not yet been finalized, the law will require motor carriers to obtain a “HUT” permit and to file and remit taxes to the Connecticut Department of Revenue on a monthly basis.

MMTA members may read the law and can calculate the impending cost to your company by computing the number of miles travelled in CT and the costs per mile in the chart below.

By way of background, weight distance tax provisions were repealed in 20 states for several reasons, and currently only remain in New York, Kentucky, Oregon, New Mexico, and soon to be Connecticut.  Please feel free to contact MMTA if you have questions – we will keep members updated as the filing and administration details unfold.
