On August 20th the MMTA Safety Management Council (SMC) was privileged to once again observe the Maine State Police – Troop K, at work at the northbound weigh station in York. This annual event is normally conducted in May but was postponed until August this year due to an MSP schedule conflict.
We were honored this year by the participation of FMCSA Eastern Service Center Field Administrator Madison Lumpkin who attended and thanked our members for their hard work and commitment to trucking safety on a daily basis. He complimented those present on the great working relationship between Industry and enforcement and our shared goal of safer highways. Also participating in the tour with our members were FMCSA Maine Administrator Joe Arduca, Lt. Thomas Conlon, Commanding Officer of the NHSP truck unit, and Lt. Matt Nesto, Commanding Officer of the Vermont truck unit.
When the event began, the SMC was split into 4 groups, led by Troop K staff. The groups observed Troopers and Motor Carrier Inspectors working on Level II inspections, conducting brake inspections utilizing the Performance Based Brake Testing machine, screening trucks at the scale house utilizing the latest technology, and also weighing trucks at the fixed scales.
MMTA wishes to thank Lt. Randall Keaten and his Troop for another productive day observing Troopers and Inspectors at work. Our Safety Directors brought with them a mix of safety and maintenance personnel who were able to not only observe first-hand but also ask and answer questions during the event. The result was a productive and informative event for all and we look forward to meeting next May.
