The John Austin Trucking Foundation is pleased to announce that Eric Knight of Buckfield has been awarded a $2,000 training grant to support his pursuit of a career in Maine’s trucking industry.
Knight has already earned his Class A CDL permit and finished his training at Oxford Hills/ Nezinscot Adult Ed to obtain his full Class A CDL. He has taken a deliberate approach to learning about the trucking profession, participating in several ride-alongs with professional drivers and gaining firsthand insight into the responsibilities and opportunities that come with a career behind the wheel.
Knight has worked for approximately 2½ years as a Direct Support Professional with CASA, Inc., supporting adults and children with developmental disabilities. He previously worked at the Corning Life Sciences plant through Staffmark. He plans to remain in Maine and pursue employment with a local trucking company after completing his training, with long-term goals of becoming an owner-operator or pursuing opportunities in hazmat and tanker operations.
Recommendation letters submitted on his behalf highlighted his dedication, integrity, strong work ethic, and genuine respect for the trucking profession. Those who know Eric described him as attentive, engaged, and eager to learn, noting that he asks thoughtful questions and takes safety and responsibility seriously. His experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities has also demonstrated his patience, adaptability, problem-solving skills, and ability to remain calm and supportive when facing challenges.
Knight noted that the cost of CDL training is a significant financial challenge. The John Austin Trucking Foundation training grant will help offset the cost of his training and reduce the financial burden as he works toward obtaining his CDL and entering the trucking workforce.
The John Austin Trucking Foundation is proud to support individuals like Eric who are investing in their future while helping strengthen Maine’s trucking workforce. We wish him continued success as he begins his professional career in the transportation industry.
