John Austin Trucking Foundation Awards $2,000 Grant to Ryan Pelkey

Ryan Pelkey

The John Austin Trucking Foundation is pleased to announce that Ryan Pelkey of Union has been awarded a $2,000 grant to support his pursuit of a career in Maine’s trucking industry.

A graduating senior at Medomak Valley High School, Pelkey has long been drawn to the trucking profession. He recalls watching log trucks traveling on Maine’s roads as a child and envisioning himself one day becoming part of the industry. That early fascination has evolved into a clear career plan centered on professional driving.

Pelkey recently attended Northeast Technical Institute’s Commercial Truck Driving program to earn his Class A CDL and plans to gain experience driving log or dump trucks before pursuing additional education in electrical lineworker training. Because a CDL is required for admission to many lineworker programs, obtaining his license represents an important first step toward achieving his long-term career goals.

Throughout high school, Pelkey has demonstrated a strong work ethic, balancing his education with employment at both a local restaurant and a construction company. Those who have worked with and taught him describe him as determined, dependable, and eager to learn. Recommendation letters submitted on his behalf highlighted his maturity, resilience, and ability to approach challenges with a level-headed attitude. They also praised his strong communication skills, critical thinking abilities, and commitment to following through on his goals.

Pelkey noted that the cost of CDL training presents a significant financial challenge while he continues his high school education. The John Austin Trucking Foundation award will help offset tuition expenses and allow him to focus on his future goals.

The John Austin Trucking Foundation is proud to support motivated young people like Ryan who are investing in their future while helping strengthen Maine’s trucking workforce. We wish him continued success as he begins his professional journey in the transportation industry.
